How should I save my images for uploading to the CMS

Assuming you have considered the issues about using graphics and multimedia in your pages, the next thing is to think about how you can save your images for uploading into the CMS library.

The file formats you can use in the CMS are:

  • jpg (or jpeg)
  • gif (or giff)
  • PNG
    • PNG 24
    • PNG 8

If you take a photo with your phone or a digital camera, it will probably be in the jpeg format. But it will also be very large. At least 10 times larger than it needs to be for the web site. Send us the image and we will adjust the size for you, and add it to your library.

Once you have a suitable image file, have a look at the tutorial on how to use the library to insert them into your page.

Microsoft Word and images

MS Word is not a image file format.

Any images that get put into a Word document will suffer from permanent compression artefacts and generally be poor quality. If you want high quality images on your web site, it advisable to stay well clear of Word.

If your have a Word document with an image in it, ask the person who gave you the Word doc to provide the original images as separate files. If this is not possible, send us the Word doc anyway and we will see what we can do, but the image will have been converted enough times that the quality will almost certainly be noticeable poor.
